Good evening District 27. What a day it has been here in Bennett County. I started the day by putting up some of my new vinyl signs around the campaign HQ before the crack of dawn to surprise the locals. I then went back to bed to get some sleep. I then woke up around 7:30, showered, ate breakfast, took a conference call at 8 AM with an ad consultant, did my morning prayer, and then began assembling the flatbed trailer for the parade with my neighbor and good friend Irend Saunders.
At 12:15 PM, I walked over to the church to attend the daily mass at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. After mass, I drove my vehicle with attached flatbed trailer to line up for the 1:30 parade start time. I was impressed by the number of people lining both sides of Main and First Avenue for the Homecoming parade. As I walked the parade, I ran out of my personalized mini patriotic flying disks. I felt bad for all the kids that did not get one. My "pilot crew" of Irene Saunders and Gwen Ward were driving the vehicle as I walked behind the flatbed trailer meeting so many locals along the parade route as I passed out my rack cards and introduced myself. It was a beautiful day for a parade with no wind and delightful temperatures. As the parade progressed, we got behind and lost the parade in front of us and chose to lead the parade in a different direction past the hospital and former nursing home, though it was no longer open. Overall, it was a successful afternoon. Gwen personally thanked me for allowing her to participate in the parade since she is cooped up in her apartment all day and has no vehicle and/or driver's license to drive. She saw many friendly faces she recognized and was happy that she came for the ride. She said it was the first time she had been in a parade since the 1940s with her dad, brother, and her riding horses in a parade here in Martin. I was delighted to get this phone call. For those who may not know, Gwen Ward was my 100th signature on my nominating petition when I went to her home in January to collect her signature for my petition to run for state senate. I thought how appropriate to have her ride shotgun in the parade. She even passed out some of my flying disks for me.
After the parade, Irene and I tore down the flatbed and drove off to Kenny Rosane's Concrete Mix Batch Plant to hang another sign up along the fence line across the airport. It is a great location for oncoming traffic coming and leaving Martin. I then got another sign put up at the Harris Ranch a mile east of Martin before heading back to town where I met up with some friends for tea before heading to the Bennett County High School Homecoming Football game. The Warriors didn't do so hot and lost the game to the Lyman Raiders 50 to zero after the 4th period and the game was cut short due to the "mercy rule." I watched the burning of the BC before the game, smiled as the teaching staff kissed the bunny at half-time, chatted with a few locals, and enjoyed seeing our local volunteer fire department fly the big American flag off the engine ladder while the game was played. It made me proud to be an American and to live in this community where families value spending time with their kids and grandkids on a Friday night at a local football game. This will be the last home game for the Warriors for the season. The teams will be on the road for the remainder of the season. I wish them all the best for the remaining season.
My final and last parade of the year will be in Kadoka on Friday, October 4th for the Cougar's Homecoming parade. I hope it's another beautiful day like today. By the way, the Cougars will be playing the Warriors for their homecoming. Do I dare root for the Cougars?
After the game, I took down the signs taped to my vehicle and called it an evening - around 9:30 PM. Now it's time for bed as I have to get some more campaign signs out tomorrow...probably in West Bennett County. Enjoy your weekend. God bless.
