Good morning District 27. Last week on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, I received a thank you card from the staff at Black Hills Pregnancy Care Center (https://blackhillspregnancycenter.com/) for attending the 2024 Life Dinner fundraiser. When I opened up the card I saw a photo of beautiful Baby Aiyana – a child who was saved as a result of the good work the pregnancy care center has done in providing assistance to a woman with an unexpected pregnancy.
The photo of Aiyana sits on my desk and serves as a reminder as to why I am running for political office. Each morning when I pray my morning prayer, I can’t help but look into those beautiful brown eyes of Aiyana and thank God her mother chose life. Aiyana is the reason why I chose to run for office – to be a voice for the most vulnerable of our society – the unborn and our children. Our children arer beloved creatures made in God’s likeness and image. The proposed Amendment G to the South Dakota Constitution would take the lives of these innocent children who have no voice. Their voice is your voice.
Abortion is not the solution. It ends the life of an innocent precious baby. As if that weren’t bad enough, women who have abortions are 37% more likely to suffer from depression; twice as likely to abuse alcohol and three times as likely to abuse drugs; and as much as six times more likely to commit suicide within a year of the abortion than a woman who’d given birth! (1). These are the facts that the opposing side refuses to share with women. The opposing side wants women to buy into the lie that abortion is a woman’s reproductive health choice but yet fails to share the chronic long-term side effects that occur once that abortion has occurred.
It comes as no surprise that shortly after I attended the 2024 Life Dinner, my opponent and her surrogates began attacking me on social media for standing up for the life of the child because I support the mission of the Black Hills Pregnancy Care Center. The surrogates argue that I support a fake woman's health clinic. It goes to show that I am over the target and that my opponent and her surrogates cannot win on the issues; therefore, they have nothing else but to slander my personal character and integrity because I believe children are not a commodity but a gift from God.
Unlike Planned Parenthood, the Black Hills Pregnancy Care Center (BHPCC) provides an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and to provide the woman an opportunity to see her baby and to hear the baby’s heartbeat. According to BHPCC, once a mother has been provided an ultrasound, 92% of women change their mind about having an abortion (2). This is one of many services the BHPCC provides. I can’t think of anything better than supporting a pregnancy center that performs ultrasounds for women.
South Dakota has always promoted a culture of life. Amendment G is too extreme. Despite all the attacks from my political opponent’s surrogates, I am voting #NOinNOvember on Amendment G because I am the voice for Aiyana and for all unborn children across South Dakota. God bless.
